What's the Name of Your Store?

Updated: Oct 2, 2025

The story behind Winifred & Evalyn, and how stories inspire what we do.

When Hiata chose the name Winifred and Evalyn for her store, she wasn't just reaching for something pretty. These are the names of Hiata’s grandmothers—two women whose lives and legacies remind us daily why heritage matters. They were strong, resourceful, and full of quiet style. They taught lessons that went beyond “things” and into the heart of what makes life beautiful: care, creativity, and connection.

In many ways, Winifred & Evalyn, whether our brick and mortar store, our online spaces, and even our travel and wholesale business, is a love letter to that inheritance. Every textile, every piece of pottery, every object we source carries with it the same kind of timelessness our grandmothers embodied. Heritage doesn’t have to mean heavy or old-fashioned, it means remembering where we come from, honoring the hands that created, and choosing to live with objects that hold meaning.

And it makes us wonder—if you named a store after your grandmothers, what would it be called?

Would it be a lyrical combination like Margaret & Rose, sturdy and elegant? Or something playful like Grandmere Jeannette that instantly conjures up a kitchen table and a mug of coffee?

Imagining is more than a game for us; it’s a way of carrying forward the stories of the women who shaped us, but also to serve as a reminder to those that pass by our physical or online store, that the stories and intent of our purchases matter. Our grandmothers may never have seen themselves as tastemakers or trendsetters, but they left us with an inheritance of values: to buy thoughtfully, to care for what we own, and to treasure what is made with love. That’s exactly what we hope to pass on to you through Winifred and Evalyn.

So tell us—if your store carried your grandmother’s name, what would it be called? We’d love to know!
