A Jacob & Josef Kohn chair refers to any of the elegant bentwood chairs created by the highly regarded Austrian furniture manufacturer from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. The company was a major competitor to the more famous Thonet firm and worked with prominent designers of the Vienna Secession movement to create innovative furniture.

History of Jacob & Josef Khon:

Jacob Kohn and his son Josef Kohn established their company in Vienna in 1849.

Bentwood rivalry: The Kohn company quickly became a leading competitor to Gebrüder Thonet, another Austrian company specializing in bentwood furniture. Kohn developed a more efficient manufacturing method for bending beech wood using steam, which allowed for mass production. At the turn of the 20th century, the Kohns collaborated with some of Vienna's most prominent avant-garde designers and architects, including Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser,

Otto Wagner, and Gustav Siegel.

Kohn merged with the Mundus manufacturing group in 1914. This new entity, Mundus-Kohn, later merged with Thonet in 1922 to form Thonet-Mundus, the largest furniture manufacturer in the world. The Kohn brand name was phased out by 1937.

This chair is in wonderful condition given its likely age of over 100 years. The light wear and tear are consistent with age and use; the tapestry fabric seat is in good condition with wear and tear consistent with age.
